Three Must Read Books

#1  The Big Short -  Inside the Doomsday Machine
Why Did  So Many People Miss The Problems?
The Book is My All Time Favorite -  https://amzn.to/4aTeNHa
The Big ShortAs you read or listen to the book, or watch the movie, how would you have managed for the unknown Great Recession that was on the Horizon? Or what would you have done different? The Book is a great lesson for all of us and the book is particularly well written.  A market collapse doesn't happen overnight, it can be a 10 to 15 year experience.  The Great Recession officially spanned about 18 months, officially running from December 2007 to June 2009, making it the longest economic downturn in the U.S. since the Great Depression.  After the Great Recession, Europe experienced a debt bomb that most countries still haven't recovered from, Book #3 below, Boomerang provides a great detailed overview..

By Michael Lewis, March 15, 2010   Available in many formats Book, Kindle and Video

I have watched the movie twice and I am currently reading the book for the third time.

Michael Lewis wrote the bestselling book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.  The Book Published on March 15, 2010 by W. W. Norton & Company. The Movie Released in theaters in December 2015.

Anyone looking to understand modern financial markets, risk management, or the psychological blind spots that fuel economic bubbles, the Big Short remains an essential, read.

Real Example - AXOS Bank Built During The Build Up To The Great Recession

Michael Lewis brilliantly describes the buildup and aftermath of the great recession with a fascinating focus on Michael Burry, the eccentric hedge fund manager who founded Scion Capital. Following this review of AXOS is a timeline of the events we had to manage through. To this day I don’t understand why the vast majority of those that should have known better didn’t see the problem. AXOS was positioned perfectly and we prospered in the wake of the industry failure as I did in prior failures.

BofI (AXOS) under my direction, plus the CFO (Andrew J. Micheletti), and Chief Credit Officer (Patrick A Dunn) built a new bank with significant headwinds. We built with no problems and we were positioned perfectly to benefit from the oncoming industry carnage.

Unfortunately, the survival structure depressed earnings starting one year after our IPO in 2005 and that put pressure on the board from stockholders. Few people in America saw the future real estate problems that accelerated in late 2005. Its difficult for management of a public company when the industry is significantly outperforming a business. Then again, I can’t believe how so many people missed the problems.

Much of what is written in the book we had to guard against at our new digital bank. In fact Andy the CFO and I had a call with the largest home lender in America. I was explaining why we wouldn’t purchase a large pool of loans. His response was “ if you believe x, y, z is a problem we all have much bigger problems. My response was simple, you are correct, we all have much bigger problems.

Gregory Garrabrants started as Chief Executive Officer of BofI Holding, Inc. and the bank in October 2007, and he immediately saw the BofI opportunity from problem banks and wall street. He has built a good team, and they continue to do very well.

#2  Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
DFIN Says Balance Ai With  Intuition - https://amzn.to/4vQxx1r
Blink Intuition
I have read most if not all books authored by Malcolm Gladwell, he is a great author and this book is on target

"Review - Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell is a fascinating, fast-paced exploration of intuition, rapid cognition, and the split-second decisions we make every day.

First published in 2005, Gladwell's trademark storytelling style transforms complex psychological concepts into accessible narratives that challenge our preference for slow, deliberate analysis"

Malcolm Gladwell Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005) is a "Canadian writer 's second book. It presents in popular science format research from psychology and behavioral economics on the adaptive unconscious: mental processes that work rapidly and automatically from relatively little information. It considers both the strengths of the adaptive unconscious, for instance in expert judgment, and its pitfalls, such as prejudice and stereotypes."

#3  Boomerang - Travels in the New Third World
Watch For The Unusual In Plane Sight - https://amzn.to/4wu1k10

"Review - Michael Lewis dissects the 2008 global financial crisis showing how different countries behaved when flooded with “a tsunami of cheap credit” between 2002 and 2008. The book is short, fast, and vivid, but also unsettling: Lewis argues that each nation’s crisis wasn’t just about bad finance — it was about national character laid bare.

Boom IntuitionLewis uses Iceland, Greece, Ireland, Germany, and California as case studies to show how easy money exposed cultural blind spots, fantasies, and self-destructive tendencies. The result is a darkly funny, deeply revealing portrait of the “New Third World.”

Traces cheap credit: Explores macroeconomic consequences of cheap financing.

Exposes cultural flaws: Links specific societal norms to massive financial bubbles.

Visits default zones: Investigates collapses in Iceland, Greece, Ireland, and Germany.

Targets domestic crises: Examines municipal bankruptcies within California and Washington D.C.
Many European Countries are still trying to get the Government Finances in order.
